Staying Healthy in Flu Season and 3 Ways to Get Rid of a Cough

lifestyle nutrition Mar 13, 2018

There’s something about this winter season.  Everyone I’ve talked to is either sick, getting over being sick, or has a ton of people in their life that are sick.  And let’s be real, nobody got time for that!

I recently got sick for the first time in years and it has been going on and off for about a month.  Finally my doctor figured out I’ve actually been battling strep all this time, so antibiotics are the next step.  That’s something I generally try to avoid at all costs, but there are situations where they are very necessary, and this is one of them.  That means some extra gut support will be needed.

During this past month, I also managed to pick up a heavy cough somewhere along the way.

Coughs are tricky because they can get worse at night when you lie down, preventing sleep (and keeping any loved ones awake with you all night long!) while making it even tougher to get over it.  Plus, coughing is downright violent after a while and can start to get quite painful.

Basically, whatever we can do to get rid of a cough as quickly as possible is ideal!

After MUCH experimentation with various natural remedies, I came up with the 3 remedies that worked WONDERS.  I was blown away and knew I had to share, because these tips totally saved me and I’m hoping they will do the same for you!

    1. GARGLE WITH SALT WATER TWICE PER DAY, USUALLY FIRST THING IN THE MORNING AND LAST THING  BEFORE BED.

If you only choose one of these tips to deal with a cough, you absolutely must try the salt water!  Not only can it be helpful with clearing bacteria but it calmed my cough immediately.  It was hard to believe how well it worked, I went from non-stop coughing the previous night to sleeping through the night entirely once I started gargling.  Try repeating the gargle 2 – 3 times in a row, and be sure to spit it all out, you don’t want to swallow it.

These’s something very healing about salt water.  I think that’s why I’m always so in love with being in / near oceans.  Who feels the same way?!

    2.  MIX 8 OUNCES OF WARM WATER WITH 1 TSP. OF APPLE CIDER VINEGAR.

This was really nice post-saltwater gargle and calmed my throat a lot, especially any residual irritation from the salt water (and from days of coughing non-stop).  Simple and easy with little to no effort involved and makes a big difference.

    3.  THYME, FRESH OR DRIED.  STEEP 1 – 2 TABLESPOONS IN BOILING WATER TO MAKE A TEA.

Fun fact I didn’t know about thyme until I did some research: when made into a tea like this, it can relax the bronchial muscles and help reduce coughing.  Originally discovered in Germany in the 18th century, it has several different uses including some digestive issues.  As a bonus, it has a beautiful, full flavoured taste that I really enjoyed and it was perfect before bed.  Not quite as effective as the salt water, but most nights I used all three of the tips above for maximum benefits.
