Listen up: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The number of followers someone has on Instagram (or social media in general) does NOT equal connection, nor does it equal revenue or profits.
This has become especially apparent to me living in Bali where there is an unusually high concentration of so-called “influencers” in a very small geographical location, and the judgements and perceptions that come with it have led me to coming forward with this discussion.
What I often see happening with *some* of these massive platforms is LOW TRUST. There’s very little trust built with their audience.
I even recently heard about an influencer with over 2 million followers who couldn’t manage to sell 30 t-shirts to their followers.
Don’t get me wrong, there are absolutely benefits to very large followings and it can open a lot of doors, which we’re discussing today as well.
But judging someone based solely off of their following is a mistake, and we’re digging into all of the issues around this and misconceptions in this episode.
Additionally, some of the best questions to ask yourself when it comes to building your audience in a purpose-driven way rather than focusing on the numbers:
How can you serve them better?
How can you show up for them in new ways?
How can you support them, help them, offer them something they might really need to hear or something of value that would benefit them?
How can you connect them with new people or connections that would benefit all involved parties?
When you can show up for your people in a genuine way like this, it’s going to build massive trust that will pay off in the longer term, regardless of how many followers you have.
